Student Profile: Liz Sandlin

Hometown: Southlake, TX

Design interests: Furniture design, restaurant and nightclub design, high-end retail design, hotel design.

Favorite part of design: The “aha” moment when working on a project. When things haven’t been falling into place and then you have that moment where all of the sudden things start to come together and make sense.

Strongest skill: My strongest skill is my networking ability. I love meeting new people and organizing events to allow people to interact. My strongest technical skill would have to be Sketchup. I’m also a big fan of hand rendering!

Favorite designers: Renzo Piano, I.M. Pei, Kelly Wearstler, Jonathan Adler

Personal statement: Something that I pride myself in is attention to detail. I have a problem with letting things go until they are just right. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a design translated from an image in your mind into a real world application. That’s what it’s all about!

Where I’ll be in 5 years: Working as a designer at a firm that I enjoy or in the process of starting my own firm.

Dream job: Anything in high-end residential, hospitality, or high-end retail design.

Design Lab Life

These days most of us are pretty deep into our final renderings, spending hours upon hours in the studio setting up images in SketchUp, Kerkythea, and 3DS Max. Here's a little peek into what our world is looking like, as told by instagram.

Really though, don't touch the computer. emojiemojiemojiemoji #RenderInProgress#3DSmax#tcuinnov8

Student Profile: Ashley Holmes

Hometown. Dallas

Design Interests (Residential, Commercial, Hospitality, etc.): Commercial

Favorite Part of the Design: seeing design come to live in a final product and having something to show for your work

Process/Strongest Skill (Programming, space planning, furniture selection, lighting, etc.): space planning and programming - I love exploring different realms of design and putting it all together in a puzzle

Inspiration (Favorite Designer, etc.): travel inspires me

Personal Statement (Why I chose Interior Design, I think design matters because, etc.): I think design matters because we are surrounded by design constantly - at home, at school, at the office, at restaurants, at stores... Design can be a reflection of who we are as a person, and can also give off a particular image or emotion to those that a certain place is wanting to provide to its customers, employers, etc. It also effects our environment which eventually effects us.

If I didn't Design, I would...: be a psychiatrist

Where I'll be in 5 years: Still working hard at Gensler and learning something new everyday

Student Profile: Calyn Cox

Hometown:  Born in Cypress, TX but grew up in Dubai, UAE (which is where I call "home")

Design Interests:  Hospitality Design

Favorite Part of the Design Process: Space Planning

Favorite Designers:  Kelly Wearstler, Jonathan Adler and Katie Ridder (all of whom have branched out and used their brilliant design talents to create their own furniture, textiles, and or clothing and jewelry designs)

Personal Statement:  I believe that my job as a designer is to pay attention to the subtle tints and details that make the world around us such a unique and interesting place and to constantly strive to implement unique color, pattern and texture into my designs.

If I didn't Design, I would... Be a lot less stressed.... and would have probably done nursing or have become a veterinarian (which was my dream occupation growing up)

Where I'll be in 5 years:   Hopefully employed at a hospitality firm and loving the work that I do

Dream Job:   Working for Kelly Wearstler and learning how to design like she does
